NOTE: A new system of telephone area codes went into effect in Mexico on November 17, 2001. This page includes the latest information we have for placing calls using the new system.

To call Mexico from other countries, dial the international code, country code, area code and number. For example, to call Mexico from the USA or Canada, dial 011+52+area code+number.

To call long distance within Mexico:
Station to station direct: 01+area code+number
Person to person with operator assistance: 02+area code+number
Operator assisted long distance call: 020

To Convert from the old telephone number system to the new system:
You may see telephone numbers formatted in a variety of ways, but in general, if you take the last seven digits and put the new area code in front of them, the number should work. For example, if you see a telephone number in La Paz listed as 112-5-1195 or as (1)125-1195, drop the first 1, then put the new 612 area code in front of the remaining numbers. The exceptions to this rule are the parts of Mexico that have two-digit area codes. Those areas include Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. In those places, the local numbers consists of eight digits.

Operator assisted call from Mexico to other countries: 090

Ask about surcharges made by phone services and hotels that place calls for you.

Beware of the tempting signs everywhere inviting you to just pick up the receiver and dial 0. This service costs the receiver $25 for the first three minutes and $5 each minute thereafter. LADATEL cards are much cheaper - about $1.30 per minute to the US.

FAX COMMUNICATION SERVICES
Some towns now have communications centers that will send and receive faxes for you. Some shops offer the service as do Marinas.
